Results

• Screen positive results mean that the infant has an increased chance to have the disease.
• For screen positive dried blood spot or biliary atresia results, NSO refers the infant to a regional treatment centre or specialist physician for follow-up diagnostic testing to determine if the infant truly has the disease.
• CCHD screening is performed point-of-care and screen positive results should be followed up on immediately. 

If the infant’s blood sample is unsatisfactory (for example, if it was taken too early, or if there was not enough blood to do the testing), NSO will contact the submitting hospital or health care provider and ask them for a new sample. The health care provider who submitted the sample should call the parent/guardian to inform them and arrange for another sample to be taken.

NSO will fax an unsatisfactory report to the submitter in these cases. If a repeat sample is not received, NSO will follow-up with the submitter and/or the family.
